H.E.R. – I Can't Breathe
In a recent episode of the iHeartRadio Living Room Concert Series , H.E.R said that the Black Lives Matter movement and the murder of George Floyd inspired her to write her latest track "I Can't Breathe." "These lyrics were kind of easy to write because it came from a conversation of what's happening right now, what's been happening, and the change that we need to see," she says of the song's writing process. It's another stunner from the R&B star, marked by soulful vocals that encapsulate grief and frustration, poignantly expressed through the song's titular refrain.
Anderson .Paak – Lockdown
Anderson .Paak throws another political punch with his "Lockdown." Fans of Paak will recognize his familiar funky style, but "Lockdown" also shows a more serious side of the artist, with lyrics that ruminate and reflect on current events. From criticisms of police violence to callouts on those disparaging protestors, "Lockdown" properly conveys universally shared feelings of anger, fear and empowerment.
Noname – Song 33
Clocking in at just over a minute long, Noname's "Song 33" is jam packed with emotion and frustration. The single is a response to J. Cole's " Snow On Tha Bluff ", which many speculated was a criticism of Noname's activism. The Chicago rapper is well-known for drawing attention to current issues, calling out others' lack of political action and even starting a book club dedicated to uplifting POC voices. If anything, "Song 33" shows that Noname is not backing down anytime soon.
Update: Noname also announced she will be donating a portion of the song's earnings to various mutual aid funds.
Ebenezer – Melanin
At its core, Ebenezer's "Melanin" encapsulates an intense pride of being a part of the black community, while also acknowledging the hardship that the community faces. The UK rapper proclaims "I gotta say I'm proud" but also laments that "all because I'm black / that's why they treat me different." "Melanin" is also part of a series of songs Ebenezer wrote, produced and mixed on Instagram live in under an hour as part of his Quarantine Studio Series .
Victoria Monét – Experience (with Khalid & SG Lewis)
Heartbreak is one of the most painful experiences you can go through. Yet Victoria Monét's "Experience," which features some serious supporting talent from Khalid and SG Lewis, makes it feel borderline joyful. Armed with a retro beat — much in the line of Doja Cat's " Say So " — Monét wishes the best for her ex on her latest track. She acknowledges on Instagram that such a "joyful and celebratory" track may seem out of context right now, but in releasing it Monét hopes to "highlight and celebrate Black joy and love in the middle of so much pain and trauma."
Ashnikko – Cry (Ft. Grimes)
Where was Ashnikko when we were angry teens with too many feelings? The blue-haired singer — who we just highlighted in an ATG feature that you should definitely check out — has created another empowering anthem in "Cry." Her latest single features Grimes and was produced by the aforementioned Ebenzer. Ashnikko's warning that things could get gruesome for the next person who wants to mess with her is just the energy we want to bring into the rest of 2020.
The Beths – Out of Sight
As a fellow Pisces, I was on board with "Out of Sight" from its first lyric: "Someone told me I'm a water sign / that means I move among greater minds." With plaintive vocals and fuzzy instrumentals, The Beths' latest single drips with nostalgia and wistfulness. Lyrics encapsulating the feeling of being perhaps too in love with someone who may not love you back will be recognizable to many, but as The Beths noted, us overly-romantics will probably relate to them the most.
The Killers – My Own Soul's Warning
"My Own Soul's Warning" is the latest single off The Killers upcoming album Imploding the Mirage (their first without guitarist Dave Keuning). Longtime fans will recognize much of the band's usual flair in this new one with its catchy beat and addictive lyrics, but it's also got a new and fresh feeling of its own. With its lamentations on lost love and the desire to return to what they left behind, it also fits perfectly with the rest of the featured tracks this week.
Anna of the North – Dream Girl (Home Made)
You're not seeing double. Anna of the North's "Dream Girl (Home Made)" is a new version of the title track off her 2019 album. This time around the Norweigan artist forgoes the poppiness of the original for more muted, dreamy vibes that perhaps better encapsulate the feeling of unrequited love. BRB, we're going to our room to cry to lyrics like "In my dream world / I'm still your dream girl."
